Day Two 8/30

Chrysanthemum_(Henkes_book)

Today was a wonderful day with the fifth grade students.  We began today by looking at the history of our own names. Along with our writing, I read students the story Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. I told students the story of my name, which was originally planned as a boys name (Nathan). When I was born, they thought that Natalie was the next best thing to Nathan, and viola! My name was created. We still have a laugh about that story in my family. Students may come home asking about their own name to see if there is a story behind it.

Students also set up their writing notebook today. This was the most focused group of students I have ever watched set up their notebooks! I was very impressed.

Tomorrow students will continue their name illustration for the classroom and we will begin a new lesson. It is great to be back to school. Have a wonderful evening.
